Peru is famous for its pre-Colombian culture and especially for the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, officially appointed as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Machu Picchu was first declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
Peru is land of millions of citizens who still live, speak and work the way their ancestors did. Peru’s main spoken language is Spanish, even if a lot of Peruvians still speak Quechua and other native languages. The Inca Empire was the largest civilization in Pre-Columbian America and wonderful ruins can be visited in Peru. The most famous is The Machu Picchu, which is at 80 km/50 mi of Cusco, at the top of a mountain above the Urubamba Valley. According to historic documents, Machu Picchu would have been used for different utilization: the home of Pachacutec, first Inca of Tawantinsuyu; a religious sanctuary, because of its finest buildings and ceremonial evident from the main access road and as a citadel or fortress. This mystic and majestic place is also known as the "Lost City of the Incas" and became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
Cusco was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and is the historic capital of the country. This city has a great deal of monuments and is known as “the Rome of America”.
