Guayaquil is situated at the southern cost of the country. Guayaquil is the economic capital and the largest city of the country. Its port “Puerto Maritimo” is the main sea port of the country where the major part of the country’s imports & exports is handled. Guayaquil was founded in 1537 by Fransisco de Orellana and its original name is Santiago de Guayaquil. During the colonial period (16th and 17th century), Guayaquil was one of the most important ports in the Spanish South American Empire.
The climate in Guayaquil is really hot with an average of 30°C/86°F year-round. Rain is expected during January and April. Even though the city welcomes more business visitors than tourists, Guayaquil offers some attractions that are worth seeing: “Malecón 2000” is the most outstanding promenade of the Riverside of Guayaquil. Initially a small port, the riverside has been completely refurbished and is now a monumental undertaking which is now the heart of the city. This is a pedestrian walkway decorated with fountains, bridges, modern sculptures, and where there are lot of restaurants, shops, museums and other touristic infrastructure.
“Las Peñas” is one of the most successful urban renewal projects in the country. This district is part of the original Guayaquil and still boasts the largest concentration of historic architecture. Las Peñas is a really charming place with restored colorful wooden houses and garden that make you get an impression of the old, picturesque colonial Guayaquil. In front of the Cathedral, there is a small traditional urban public park called “Iguanas Park”. In this park you can see a monument dedicated to Simon Bolivar, as well as a variety of iguanas basking all around the place. The Botanical Garden of Guayaquil is a huge garden characterized by exhibiting scientific collections of living plants. The main objectives of this place are to conserve, to research, to outreach and to educate about living plants and biodiversity. That is the right place for visitors which love and respect the natural environment and want to know more about ecotourism.
